"The Turtle"
Steinbeck was inspired by the great depression to write stories like "Grapes of Wrath." In the book is a chapter about a turtle crossing the road. He takes the turtle, & uses it as a metaphor for the migrant workers of Oklahoma. The turtle has to overcome obstacles like pits, thorns, hitch-hikers, hills, cars. Very much like the families of the dust bowl, only on a greater scale, such as starvation, disease, lack of jobs & homes.
